Brain Waves

The brain vibrates much the way the heart beats, but more rapidly. The average heart beats normally around 70 - 72 times per minute, the average brain vibrations, when wide awake, are normally about 20 - 22 cycles per second (cps) or hertz (Hz). In general, higher the vibrations, worse it is; lower the vibrations, better it is. It has been observed that people with high-stress, fast-paced, modern life-style have much higher vibrations, usually above 25 cps. The brain vibrations are also known as brain wave frequencies.

Gamma Brain Waves

Frequencies - 30 Hz and above

Association - They are associated with the outer world where we use our physical senses, and are conscious of time and space. They are also known as higher beta waves. Here, we are in hyperaware state or high stress state. This relates to the conscious level of mind. This is associated with stress, tension, panic, anxiety, anger and so on. At this level, stress hormones such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol, etc. are released which are detrimental to health in the long run, and at times even in the short run.

Beta Brain Waves

Frequencies - 29 to 14 Hz

Association - They are also associated with the outer world, where we use our physical senses, and are conscious of time and space. Here, we are in wakeful state. This also relates to the conscious level of mind.

Alpha Brain Waves

Frequencies - 13 to 7 Hz

Association - They are associated with the inner world of peace and relaxation where we are semiconscious of time and space. Here, we are in trance state, in-between wakeful state and sleep state. This relates to the subconscious level of mind. At this level, healing chemicals such as peptides, endorphins, dynorphin etc. are released which repair and heal our body. This can be further divided into mild, moderate and deep trance. The deep trance ranges from lower alpha waves to higher theta waves.

Theta Brain Waves

Frequencies - 6 to 4 Hz

Association - They are also associated with the inner world of peace and relaxation where we are semiconscious of time and space. Here, we are in deep trance state, which goes down to light sleep state. This also relates to the subconscious level of mind. The lower theta waves are characterized mainly with light sleep, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) dreams, and hallucinations.

Delta Brain Waves

Frequencies - 3 to 0.5 Hz

Association - They can be said to be associated with the inner world where we are unconscious of time and space. Here, we are in deep sleep state, which goes down to unconscious state. This relates to the unconscious level of mind. The outward appearance of this state is dead to the world. No dreaming occurs in this state and at lower delta waves coma state occurs. Little is known about delta waves as on date.
